“Sarmatism. A Dream of Power” - exhibition

01.03.2010, 10:18
What connects Polish culture with Sarmatians? According to early chroniclers Polish gentry descended from that ancient Iranian tribe. Hence their love of oriental splendour and finery but also, hospitality, kind-heartedness, love of freedom, valour and courage. Although this is a highly unhistorical myth, this belief became an important part of Polish nobility culture, lifestyle and ideology. The exhibition “Sarmatism. A Dream of Power” – which is a part of Festival re_wizje / sarmatism organized by National Stary Theater – tries to answer many questions about Sarmatism, its origins and its impact on Polish culture and art.
