A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION, KRAKOW, POLAND
Education of Physical Training teachers in Poland has a tradition of over a century behind it. The first university courses for gymnastics teachers were held in the Jagiellonian University in 1893. In 1927, on the strength of a decision by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University, an independent Physical Training Centre was set up in the University. Since 1950 we have been a fully independent institution (Akademia Wychowania Fizycznego im. Bronisława Czecha w Krakowie), with full educational rights for the conferring of degrees (the doctor’s degree since 1970, and the habilitation degree since 1987) in Physical Education. The University offers degree courses for undergraduates in four fields: Physical Education, Physical Rehabilitation or Physical Therapy, Tourism Studies, and Recreation Studies. They are offered in the following fields: Physical Education - graduates become qualified teachers of physical education with the possibility of obtaining the qualifications of Coach Class II in various sports disciplines. A programme in sports journalism is also offered. In additional elective programmes qualifications for instructors in many sports disciplines, physiotherapy, tourism and recreation are also offered. Physiotherapy - graduates become qualified physiotherapists who apply therapeutic procedures in dysfunctions of motor and internal organs, apply physical agent therapies for patients of all ages. Tourism and recreations - graduates are prepared to work in tourism and recreation industries. In 1998 the University launched a programme of doctoral studies in which 31 people have participated. Didactic and research duties of the University are performed by highly qualified teachers. The University employs about 365 academic teachers: 15 professors extraordinary, 36 doctors habilitated, including 31 professors ordinary, 88 readers, 45 lecturers with the doctorate degrees.
